When I was a child, my mother would make these super-rich, uber-delicious layered magic bars for special occasions. I loved to watch her pour on the cookie bar layers in her Pyrex baking dish: graham cracker crumbs, melted margarine, chocolate chips, nuts, coconut, and sweetened condensed milk. She let me help sprinkle on the chocolate chips (though I always popped way too many of those in my mouth!).

I’ve been wanting to create a vegan version of this recipe for years, and when I spied sweetened condensed coconut milk at the natural food store, I snatched it up and dug out my mom’s original recipe to experiment with. This recipe for Vegan 6 Layer Magic Bars features only six ingredients, and you can prep it in five minutes, then bake it for about 20 minutes until it’s golden brown. While this is not a healthy bar recipe, by any means, it will certainly satisfy your cravings for an indulgent, plant-based treat!

These chocolate chip bars are great for your holiday potlucks, parties, or cookie trays, as well as kid’s parties and treats. It’s also a super fun recipe to make with your kids, as it’s so simple and easy. Make these layered magic bars gluten-free by using gluten-free graham cracker crumbs. You can also freeze these magic bars in an airtight container for up to 6 months. Try swapping out the nuts for another type, such as hazelnuts, pecans, or macadamia nuts.

Step-By-Step Guide

Here’s what you’ll need for this recipe.
Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs into 9 x 9 inch dish. Pour melted margarine over the top, mix in, and pat to make crust. Sprinkle with chocolate chips.
Sprinkle with chopped walnuts.
Sprinkle with coconut.
Drizzle with sweetened condensed coconut milk.
Bake for about 20 minutes, until golden brown. Cool and slice into squares.

These super easy, divine Vegan 6 Layer Magic Bars are easy as can be! Just layer graham cracker crumbs, margarine, chocolate chips, nuts, coconut, and sweetened condensed coconut milk, pop in the oven, and serve.



  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Mix together graham cracker crumbs* with melted margarine in the bottom of a 9 x 9-inch square baking dish, and pat down firmly.
  3. Sprinkle evenly with chocolate chips.
  4. Sprinkle evenly with walnuts.
  5. Sprinkle evenly with coconut.
  6. Place sweetened, condensed coconut milk in a microwave-safe dish and heat in the microwave for about 1 minute, until warm. Remove, and stir until smooth and creamy.
  7. Drizzle sweetened, condensed coconut milk evenly over bar mixture.
  8. Place in oven and bake 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and slightly firm.
  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely in the fridge before slicing (the mixture will become firm as it cools).
  10. Slice into 12 squares.

Notes

*Make graham cracker crumbs by placing graham cracker squares in a blender or food processor container and processing it until fine crumbs are achieved.
